Lily Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes on Sunday when she became the first Indigenous person to win Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Dramatic Motion Picture during Sunday’s ceremony.

Gladstone won the award for her performance in the Martin Scorsese-directed drama “Killers of the Flower Moon,” in which she starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

“This is a historic one. It’s just not mine. I keep it to myself along with all my beautiful sisters,” she said during her speech.

Speaking initially in the Blackfeet language, Gladstone said the Blackfeet Nation was “a beautiful community, a nation that raised me and encouraged me to move forward.”
She also honored her mother, who was with her at the ceremony Sunday, saying, “My mom, even though she wasn’t Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to bring our language into our classrooms, so growing up, I was a Blackfeet language teacher nearby.”

Gladstone expressed gratitude for being able to speak his language “a little bit” “because in this business, native actors would speak their lines in English and then the sound mixer would play them back on camera to complete the native languages.”

Referring to the Osage Nation, on which “Flower Moon” centers, Gladstone concluded his speech by saying that the award was for children who “have shown themselves to be tremendous companions and tremendous “representations of the faith.”

According to The Guardian, Gladstone grew up on the Blackfeet Reservation in northwestern Montana, telling the publication in 2017 that she lived on reservation land until she was 11 years old. They have tribal affiliations that include the Kainai, Amskapi Pikaani and Nimiipu First Nations.

In “Killers of the Flower Moon” she plays Molly Burkhart, an Osage woman who is the wife of DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart.

This is Gladstone’s first Globe nomination and win.
